Rustic Home Interiors has been in business in San Diego for over thirty years, creating beautiful, solid wood furniture for the home that is built to last. The San Marcos store specializes in quality bespoke pieces; customers have the unique ability to have furniture made to meet any design, size and stain needs.
Paul Hansen founded Rustic Home Interiors in 1985, and current owner Ashwanni (Ash) Khanna took over in 2004. Khanna was in the furniture manufacturing business in India for 32 years and exported to eight countries. He came to the United States not just to sell his furniture, but to provide a better quality of life for himself and his family.
“I have nothing but gratitude for this country,” he said.
Khanna opened his first store in Beverly Hills, and Hansen was shopping from him. While Hansen was considering resigning, he invited Khana to check out the San Marcos store: “I came here and never went back,” he said.
The Rustic House has been in the same location for 23 years, previously across the street. Clients come from San Clemente, Las Vegas and Los Angeles for his custom work. He is proud that interior designers often come to him not only to bring business, but also to decorate their personal homes.
“Customers trust me for quality and pricing,” Khanna said.
Rustic Home is both a manufacturer and importer. Her pieces are sold online at Wayfair and Houzz, as well as Costco; Khanna recently completed new furniture for a steakhouse at Palo Casino.
What makes Rustic Home unique is that they have the most exotic collection of woods, from volute, maple and pine to rosewood and acacia from India and teak from Thailand. Khanna can produce beautiful custom hand carved and contemporary pieces. A big trend right now is “live edge” slab tables, where the pieces take the natural form of the wood.
“If people want something to last a lifetime, all they have to do is sit with me,” Khanna said.
