How can a child describe what you do?
A man selling something.
What is the biggest long-term challenge you face?
The biggest challenge for me is the economy. We will likely face very difficult trading conditions for many months to come. The government needs to do more to help stimulate the economy.
If you had 10 times your work budget, what would you spend it on?
I would carry out a major rebuilding program on the ground and try to increase the number of stores we have.
What would be the title of your autobiography?
Retail is the detail.
What does ‘work/life balance’ mean to you?
Work-life balance means making time for yourself and your loved ones.
Who was your most influential professional mentor?
A director called Derek Parry, who sadly passed away a few years ago. He realized I was talented and nurtured it. He was a tough but fair boss.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Open your own business and do not work for others; You have the ability to succeed.
What has been your best day at work so far?
When I was named Manager of the Year at Wickes. I had spent a lot of effort and hours reviewing their worst store, and being presented with my award at their national conference was a proud moment for me.
What is the biggest myth about our industry?
It’s sad to say that the biggest myth is that the best quality comes from big brand manufacturers. We now have an increasing number of small companies producing very high quality products.
What should everyone in our industry stop doing or start doing?
I wish some of the big furniture retailers would be candid about their sales periods; many appear to have near-permanent sales, causing skepticism among customers.
Where do you see the industry going in the next 5-10 years?
I think the furniture industry will need to focus more on sustainable products that will be easier to recycle at the end of their life. Our customers are increasingly aware of the fact that many of our products end up in landfill.
